The Music
The music of Callings was written and performed by Michael McGlinn. These are his words...
One evening, in October of 1996, I had an inspiration to do a
body of music that was positive. I would name it Virtues, that
was all I knew at the time. So I called my uncle, Father Charles
McGlinn, to get all of the virtues and, what I also learned were
the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Later than night, I would go on
to choose the titles of what would be a 12-song endeavor all named
after virtues. The word epiphany now comes to mind
as I reflect upon that unforgettable evening and the path that,
clearly, was laid before me. I knew where I was to go and there
were no doubts.
The next seven plus years would be a time of great ecstasy and agony as I rode, with a steady hand and a sense of great wonder, the very heights afforded to an artist that chooses to risk it all- but, actually nothing at all- to respond with unbridled abandonment to the most intimate movements of the heart, all the while, suffering through the frequent humiliations that come when the only choice is to persevere.
I was in pursuit of perfection, but what I got was authenticity.
It would take every virtue to complete Virtues.
In the end, it was the sum of many hardships that produced the fruit. I would have never chosen that which tried me so dearly, yet benefitted me so greatly, as such wisdom is of God. So, it is to grace that I credit my response.
